It includes the only active <a title=\"Erg (landform)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Erg_%28landform%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">erg<\/a> dune region in <a title=\"North America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_America\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North America<\/a>. The desert extends across much of the northern border of the <a title=\"Gulf of California\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gulf_of_California\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gulf of California<\/a>, spanning more than 100 kilometres (62 mi) east to west and over 50 kilometres (31 mi) north to south. It constitutes the largest continuous wilderness area within the Sonoran Desert.<\/p><p>The eastern portion of the area contains the volcanic <a title=\"Pinacate Peaks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pinacate_Peaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinacate Peaks<\/a> region; together with the western portion, the area forms the <a title=\"El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/El_Pinacate_y_Gran_Desierto_de_Altar_Biosphere_Reserve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve<\/a> and a <a title=\"UNESCO\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UNESCO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO<\/a> <a title=\"World Heritage Site\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Heritage_Site\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Heritage Site<\/a>.<sup>[1]<\/sup><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ALTAR DESERT The Gran Desierto de Altar is one of the major sub-ecoregions of the Sonoran Desert, located in the State of Sonora, in northwest Mexico.
