-- Full Field of Bikes, UTVs and Four-Wheel Vehicles -- -- Free Motorcycle Entry for 2016 Dakar On The Line --
LONG BEACH, CALIF., -- After months of planning and anticipation for North America’s premier rally-raid, a full field of competitors is making final preparations for the 2016 Sonora Rally. Taking place April 3-7, the event will feature a long list of world-class competitors all ready to tackle the challenging desert landscape of Sonora, Mexico.
Organized by rally-raid veterans Darren Skilton and Scott Whitney, next month’s Sonora Rally has attracted some of the world’s top talent to fill out an exclusive entry list capped at 40 entries. Racers from Mexico, Canada, England and America will converge on Sunday, April 3 in San Luis Rio Colorado for registration and tech inspection on a wide variety of motorcycle, UTVs and four-wheel vehicles.
Competitors will then navigate their way to the finish line in Puerto Peñasco four days later after overcoming vast sand dunes, rocky trails and sand-filled washes. Nearly 200,000 square miles in size, the Sonora desert is the largest expanse of desert in North America – slightly larger than the surface area of Italy.
Legendary Baja champion Steve Hengeveld (above) will be joined by a stout field of two-wheel racers including Ivan Ramirez and Dakar veteran Bill Conger (top).
The motorcycle field is stacked with international talent vying for overall victory and the top prizes in the Dakar Challenge. That distinguished list includes Daker Rally veterans CR Gittere, Ned Suesse, Bill Conger, Mike Krynock, Lyndon Poskitt, Pedro De Uriarte and Kevin Heath. Also joining the field will be Dakar rider and 2015 Sonora Rally winner Quinn Cody, who will be joined by veteran desert racers Steve Hengeveld, Ivan Ramirez and Mark Samuels.
The four-wheel ranks will include talented Baja and desert off-road racers Kent Kroeker and Todd Jergensen.
Desert racing veteran and off-road suspension company founder Kent Kroeker (above) is looking forward to competing in his first international rally-raid in Sonora. Kroeker and rally co-organizer Darren Skilton have raced together in the past.
A huge feature at this year’s Sonora Rally will be its inclusion as part of the international Dakar Challenge. Before knowing what the route of the 2017 Dakar will be, two dates are already confirmed on this year’s 2016 Dakar Challenge calendar. One is the Sonora Rally, with the other taking place in May at the Merzouga Rally in Morocco. The most promising riders in each rally-raid will compete to win a free entry for next year’s edition of the legendary Dakar Rally.
Along with other prizes, the Dakar Challenge winner will receive a new set of wheels courtesy of Method Race Wheels, the “Official Wheel” of the 2016 Sonora Rally. Also jumping into the partnership family is Rigid Industries, the official light of the Sonora Rally with a special prize package for the Dakar Challenge winner.
Method Race Wheels, one of the hottest new companies in the off-road industry, has been named "Official Wheel" of the 2016 Sonora Rally. As part of that alliance the Dakar Challenge winner will receive a full set of Method's race-proven wheels.
To rally-raid participants around the world, the nighty bivouac experience is a distinctive part of the overall adventure. Specially created by Aventura Travel (www.aventuratravel.com), this year’s Sonora Rally bivouac includes the participation of top San Luis’ restaurants La Faisana and Horno 320, who specialize in fresh ingredients and local craft beer. They, along with exclusive Baja winery Baron Balche, have agreed to donate their time and wine to help the rally’s fundraising project in which proceeds from the rally meal package will go to local off-road club RPM. The club regularly donates to area volunteer firefighters and delivers Christmas gifts to under privileged children.
With the support of local restaurants La Faisana and Horno 320, as well as winery Baron Balche, the Sonora Rally entrants will enjoy world class cuisine. The dining experience at the event's all-important overnight bivouacs will be created by Aventura Travel of Long Beach, Calif. (above).
For organizers, the idea behind the creation of Sonora Rally is to build an event to spur the growth of rally raid-type events in North America. There are iconic rally raids on every continent except North America, so there was a need to build a community where all types of racers and enthusiasts can learn, compete and discover new challenges. Most importantly, it emphasizes discovery and perfecting navigation: only a road book and the most basic GPS will be permitted for the riders and navigators to find their way.
“We are very proud of the progress our team has made in bringing the Sonora Rally to the next level of adventure and execution,” explained rally director and two-time Dakar class winner Darren Skilton. “The fact that we are now at full capacity for 2016, plus our inclusion in the prestigious Dakar Challenge, are strong indications we are on the right path for the future.”
